Leopoldo Torres Aguero & Monique Rozanes

Topic: Leopoldo Torres Aguero
Monique Rozanes and Leopoldo Torres Agüero shared their life and passion for Art.

Both incredibly talented artists created -each in their own way- a breakthrough in the contemporary art scene in Buenos Aires and Paris.

Their paintings and sculptures are the result of a wise and avant-garde work of color, texture and shapes inviting the spectator to feel the artpiece through means of it's senses and the impact of the wholesome art creation.

An introspection to share, emotions, times, colors, perspectives and shapes inviting the "outsider" to take part of a world of senses and emotions often reserved for those "in the matter", the technique is the mean throguh which they share their imagination and artistic impulse with us.

These are some of their works. meet the artists and enjoy!

Leopoldo Torres Aguero's works must -as always approaching a multifaceted
artist- be seen in a broad perspective taking in account his own stages, influences and periods.

By 1941, Torres Aguero comes to Buenos Aires pursuing his way as an artist, he had already exhibited his works in Cordoba, Catamarca and La Rioja.

Back then, while geometric art ruled in Galleries and Show rooms, Torres Aguero exhibited proudly his figurative art works. Without a doubt a clear influence of his early teachers Spilimbergo and Portinari.

These works were mainly done in oil and ink. As we head on into his transicional stage throughout the 50s, his first couple of years in Paris would impact on his painting as we may perceive the shift into an abstract organic trend with some surrealist insight, this would deepen into a more lyric abstraction after his Japanese experience.

From the on, his work trade mark are to be big canvases, working with acrylic and very little oil painting. The bond between this artist and his prime acrylic material would be such -clear great managing and use of all the paint potentiality- and evident in his work, as always exploring in depth the virtues of color and texture of acrylic, his lyric abstractions would sum up as essentialist and abstraction, nobility of material and of imagination, brought together through means of gifted hands.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1924, Leopoldo Torres Agüero is a very
influential artist whose main pieces were wordily acknowledged specially
throughout the 1990s.
When analizing Torres Agüero's artwork, specialists agree to state that
there are three different stages within his lifetime works: Figuration,
lyric abstraction and sensible geometry.
Torres Aguero had lived for a couple of years in Paris early in his artistic
life, hence his early stage. He then had returned to Buenos Aires where he
was Profesor at the Fine Arts Academy in Buenos Aires.
From 1959 to 1961 Leopoldo Torres Agüero lived in Japan; this particular
relocation is seen by many art specialists as a crucial life- experience
which impacted in his art view and oriented him to full abstraction. This
was beautifully achieved throughout his last aesthetic stage where the
beauty of color and sensitivity of lines prevail outstandingly.
When he returns to Argentina he joins the organization commission to the
four Latin America exhibitions of painting and sculpture at the Musee d`Art
moderne, Parìs. Some years latter he was to become the Argentine Curator at
the Biennal in Venice where his "Le Parc" work wins the International First
Prize.
His public work would be nonstop from then on, his opening speech to "First
International Congress for the Handicapped", Unesco, Paris was very
recongnized.
When he returns to Buenos Aires with his wife, the French sculptor Monique
Rozanes his art work would be complemented with all sort of lectures and
seminars, it's at that time with "Del Escrito" published by the Freudian
School in Buenos Aires , "La Montaña y su dibujo", Bilingual edition:
Spanish-French, Bornat, Parìs are published.
Among the many awards he received throughout his during these late years he
was awarded the Palanza Prize in Buenos Aires and " Chevalier des Arts et
Lettres" medal in France", commemorative medal awarded for his mural
painting in the Santa Fe Gallery, Buenos Aires. He also organizes and
participates the International Fair in Caen, dedicated to Argentina.

He was a prolific artist, throughout his lifetime career. His works are
exhibited in many museums in Buenos Aires and throughout the world, plus in
several imponent private collections.

His abstract art work are interesting and attractive. However what took him
to the top Art Society was his close and controversial friendship with
former Argentinean president Carlos Saul Menem. This quote fantastically
expresses their relationship and how deeply tied to his art it was:

"Celebrating my first fifty years of work makes me think about Hokusai who
said he would achieve his most accomplished drawings after turning 100 years
old, ideal timing to develop a loving friendship with the heart of shapes,
where the jasmine's alchemy generates a mix of perfume and rainbow; seven
chromatic pulses that invent life.
Light, particle wave, mass- less corpuscle; its virtuality provides it with
returning velocity, before having gone.
Hence I return to La Rioja, searching my first colors, once again taking my
chances with Hope, faithfully hoping to recover an Argentina for us all.
I toast for this transcendental present."

Torres Aguero, October, 1989 -This toast was made in La Rioja Carlos Saul
Menem home town, at the time when he had won the presidential elections.
His friendship with former president Menem and his prolific artwork awarded
him a cherished public position for all artists: Argentina's Ambassador to
the UNESCO in Paris.
On December 31st 1995, Leopoldo Torres Agüero passes away in Paris.

Viski Janos, sporting artist oil paintings

Sotheby, Sporting Artists and Viski, J

Viski is a great Hungarian artist about whom we’ve written many articles in the past couple of years. Just out of coincidence we discovered him, and immediately fell in love with his great technique and master hand. Soon we began to work on a through research project to recover him from the darkness of times, and acknowledge his works as they should have been properly appreciated.

Our work soon began to be read all over the world by means of our web posts and logs, and the constant information flow and consultation we’ve received over the past years has led us to believe there seems to be a great interest on his works.

Even the world famous online auction house eBay has had some interesting auctions on him, though sadly these were not as well appreciated as they should… However, most of the Viski enthusiasts –just like us- were surprised and quite disappointed to see a fake Viski –from a Scandinavian Country- auction being held online, and sold as an original…

Anyway, soon Sotheby’s will hold a great auction on Sporting Artists, in which our beloved Viski is most likely to appear, and we hope for all Viski enthusiasts to find this fabulous event an opportunity for Viski to enter the grand hall of the 20th century artists.

Viski Janos, sporting artist oil paintings
For a while now we have been researching and posting information on this famous Hungarian artist that is Janos Viski. Just recently, while we kept on researching on the matter we came across this information regarding our artist and a situation during the Second World War, when the Nazis confiscated nearly a train full of valuable art, jewelry, silver and china –among the many other objects-… We wanted to share with our readers this information and a brief article we wrote on those events.

It’s strange how things go chaining up… for after researching the history and art done by Viski we came across such interesting and strange story…

The Gold Train from Hungary.

During the Second World War not only the world assisted to our history as
humanity's most outrageous genocide but also, the Nazi-fascist regime
perpetrated the hugest theft ever. When sending innocent human beings to
concentration camps and Ghettos, the Nazis took not only millions of peoples
lives, dreams, projects, but also all their belongings. Indeed all sort of
material property seems value-less when we put it side by side to the fact
that over 6,000,000 human beings were asphyxiated with poisoned gas. Each
and every life is unique, there's no price that can be set upon it without
under- pricing it. not all the money in the world could purchase the
potentiality each individual has within to be, to BE in all aspects of life.
Those who price the human potentiality are others, some cold soul individual
that assets someone else's life as a merchandize, an object. This said, it's
important that we don't approach this matter from a somewhat naïve
perspective. The holocaust had strong economic foundations linked to the
immense hatred that filled those people's hearts. The final solution, the
need of asphyxiating millions of men, women, children -Jews, Gypsies, gays,
communists, etc- had a solid economic stepping stone, gas was cheaper than
bullets, it was a "cleaner process". it's all very clearly explained in the
Nazi documents. This human aberration was never an outbreak, it was a
carefully orchestrated plan triggered by money and hatred.

Even clearer is this matter if we take in consideration the fact that all
prisoners were forced to work without a wage, slavery -in all its forms and
shapes- was one of the main production incomes during this totalitarian
regime. And in this same line we can understand the existence of what was
known as the Gold Train that took place in Hungary, though it could have
occurred in any other location. Packed inside 29 boxcars were valuable
family heirlooms of Hungarian Jewry, such as art, gold jewelry, diamonds,
coins and currency, silverware, fine china, porcelain and religious items
made of precious silver and gold, including kiddush cups, esrog and spice
boxes, ritual handwashing cups, and Havdoloh holders.

During the war there were countless of forced confiscations. The stolen
goods were taken over by some Nazi hierarchy. at this point, their
tremendous hatred towards Judaism and those who practiced this religion was
left aside, they appropriated their wealth, hung their fine art in the
living rooms of the houses they had confiscated from the most prominent Jews
of each city, dined with their china, used their jewelry.

They aimed to repeat this tactic regarding the Gold Train. However,
something happened.

When the train headed from Budapest to Hallein, Austria, finishing the
journey on March 30, 1945, the war was soon to be over, and no one was to
spend time guarding a train in stead of saving their lives. Then the train
was put into custody of the United States. and soon another story was to
begin. According to the information available online on the matter we have
found that there's a lawsuit taking place. According to the information at
http://www.cuneolaw.com/current/amended_goldtrain.html the US Army would
have taken over the property of the train and never return it to its
rightful owners, even more, it seems it was appropriated by some people of
the US hierarchy. These valuable items, among which we have certain notice
that there were some outstanding paintings of Janos Viski the gifted
Hungarian artist, that in recent times have raised popularity.

J Viski Sporting Painter

Janos Viski, and the famous horses from Hungary

Before our first article on Viski, published in several web magazines and forums, the information available on this gifted Hungarian artist was rare and little. The research work weve done bringing to the public eye Viskis biography and aesthetic style resulted in a broader task, after we were contact upon an ever growing number of collectors, sellers and buyers interested in Viskis works.

In this opportunity we post this information on the web aiming to contact all those who happen to have any of Janos Viskis work. As a part of our research and recovery work on unfairly forgotten artists we want to complement our writing with an online catalog like registration.

We have found the need to work on this matter throughout the years of dealing art privately and through auctions such as the on eBay selling through a live auction, this auction house called Stanford auction sold one for $950 US;the auction ended,Auction Date: May-01-05 10:00:00 PDT with 13 bids. It was lot 166 and it was offered By: Stamford Auction

The description was: Oil on canvas, Cowboys rustling Horses. Signed lower right. 23 1/2 x 31 1/2." (1891-ca.1961).

And its estimate value for this auction was: $400 - $600. Selling in the end for $950.- Ebay Live Auctions. A buyer's premium of 20% will be applied to those sales, so add $190 and in some cases TAx ......so the price goes over $1140

..... and you also have to know that in the past, this paineter ws included in a Sothebys Auctions, even more since it was included in the
SOTHEBY'S important sporting paintings and prints in New York on June of 1985.

His first exhibition dates from 1913 -although there is some people date it from 1921- By admiring his works, one can easily see-through his paintbrushes, and feel his passion for animals, specially horses. According to many Art Specialists, it was not just the animal he was interested in but also it's
features and particular movement, which he successfully managed to portray in his works.
Forms and colors were his main tools to express himself, animals and landscapes, his passions. His works reflect that supreme blend, fantastically achieved by a gifted artist. Featuring motion and forms as well as color effects in open-air locations, his most frequent model were
horses.

His pictures express strength; and a careful admirer would discover a great impressionist effect. His paintings could and can be admired several
museums, galleries and show rooms all over Hungary, and many of them can be found in private collections in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. For in his
quest to admire light and natural beauty, he traveled several times to these
southern countries on study trips. In 1936 he was awarded a Grand Prix at the 1936 Salon des Beaux Arts in Paris.
